Camping Cost

Our arrangement with the state for land use has changed this year. They have developed an entirely new use situation. In some ways it will help us in other ways it leads closer to our not being able to use this site in the future.

We will have less overall cost and we must distribute them to you who camp. Camping will be one dollar per person per night. That should cover the lump cost and the permits the state is requiring of us as well as insurance. This fee will be collected by camp with you being responsible to get your camp info and money to us in the envelopes we will provide.

What you need for camping

Northmen camping is primitive camping at its best. We list some things you will probably need. Shelter, lanterns (no electricity is available), fire starter, dishes, cooking utensils, chairs, table, plastic for awnings, good warm sleeping bags (it can get cool at night), shovel, rake, hatchet, bug dope, jackets, food for meals, dish washing needs, flashlights, rain gear, water jugs, rope & maybe some others things you think of. Do NOT bring any wood. This is an absolute no no and the DNR will be checking. We will have wood available for your use at a minimal cost.

Where to camp

It is first come first serve on camp sites. We do have a new rule from the state. No one can camp within 100’ of the creek. We will have signs posted as to where that line is. It will affect some of your who have been very close to the creek in past years. There is plenty of room for tents, motor homes and trailers.

What’s available

At the camp site you will find water, wood, and items like bread, milk and ice. We charge only our cost for those items (no cost for water). Anything else you might need you must provide. The milks kept cold and we try to keep the ice available at all times. It is about 12 miles to the nearest store or gas station. It is wise to fill your gas tanks up as you come to camp.

Boys Meetings

Junior boys will meet in their own sessions during the day. Two one hour sessions in the morning are times of singing, learning and sharing. These sessions are led by men from various congregations. In the afternoon the boys have recreation. The first day is general recreation. The second day will be the bicycle rally. Terry Stickler is in charge of this and promises a good time and prizes. If at all possible Jr. boys need to bring their bikes.

Teens meet for two one hour sessions each morning and a one hour session on Wednesday afternoon. Thursday afternoon they take their canoe trip on the Manistee. This trip is for teens only and is directed by people who are very capable. Cost is in the neighbor of $15 or $20 per boy. Permission slips needed.

If you bring boys be sure they are in sessions during the day and in the big tent with you at night please.

Some things to remember

No smoking (things are really dry). No firearms. No green material is to be cut at any time. Fireworks are illegal. Leave your spot as you find it. Fire pits for all fires. Never leave a fire unattended. If you have ORVs, please use them off the grounds, there are trails nearby. Knives, hatchets and axes are to be closely policed, bicycles are to be used in a prudent manner. First aid material is available. If you bring a group of boys you are expected to see to their actions. We expect them in the tents at session time. Quiet time begins at 10 each night.

Meeting costs are covered by offerings taken each night. Our meeting costs generally run $15 or more per person attending.

Help is needed

We can always use extra funds for set-up. If you would like to send your offering early or help with expenses we would encourage that. Funds should be sent to the address listed elsewhere. All funds will be receipted and checks should be made out to the Northmen.

We can also use help for the boys meetings at times. If you would be willing to help with one of the sessions let us know soon. We can find a place for you to work.

Notes of Interest

Last December’s Northmen in Thailand saw about 70 men gathered for the three days. It was a great meeting. This years Thailand Northmen will again meet in early December and those going will share in building a new dorm for the boys at the Pamaidang hostel. Interested? Speak to Mike or Larry Beaverson.

Our theme for 2007 will deal with the parables. We will have expository messages from several of our Lord’s most significant parables. We hope to be able to announce some of the speakers at the final session in August.

What about land use? Your guess is as good as ours. This year’s preparation and cost have been interesting.

No promises are made as to the future. Many things could affect this matter. We will just keep pressing on and meeting as the Lord provides and allows. I (Mike) personally am shooting for 50 years. We will see what takes place.

Mike’s work in other areas continues. House churches meet at Ogemaw, Gaylord and Indian River. Groups meet at Tawas and in the Harrison/Houghton area. We are always looking for opportunities for a new group. We are selling most of the property in Ogemaw County as it cannot be used for the things we intended to do there. Mike and Terry will maintain a home on property being kept and continue in the ministry of groups and house churches. Work with NMBI will continue with a class in Romans continuing at Lake City. We are hopeful of interest in a class in the Kalkaska area. We also continue doing seminars and meetings .
